Joining KSH’s Volunteer Team
Kitchener South - Hespeler’s Volunteer Team to elect our green candidate is a satisfying and rewarding engagement for those who want to improve our community.
Thank you for looking at getting involved.
If you are set to join us... Welcome!
Let's get started by clicking below.
If you're not quite sure yet...
Here are the basic descriptions of our most common volunteer tasks. We are most busy during the official campaign period, but many tasks have preparation and/or activity year round. We don't ask for more of your time than you are able to provide. Doing anything to contribute makes you a star in our books. We know from experience, it will make you feel pretty darn good too!
Community Events
Community engagement is our greatest priority between elections. We do things as part of a team that help us serve and get to know our community. It also allows the community to get to know us. These activities are often quite fun.
This activity is a good fit for you if:
● You like getting fresh air and little exercise, in things like group community litter clean-ups.
● You are personable and can staff an event table with another volunteer for a couple hours at a time to share information with passersby.
● You are respectful to all voters, even to those who have chosen another party or candidate to support.
Walk & Talk
Foot canvassing is our greatest priority. New canvassers will be paired with an experienced one or with the candidate when out knocking on doors. People are for the most part happy to engage with you, or are polite when declining to have a chat.
This activity is a good fit for you if:
● You like getting fresh air and exercise, in all kinds of weather.
● You are a good listener. We are looking for information, so following the “two ears/one mouth rule”, you are able to listen twice as often as you speak. (Be interested, not interesting).
● You are personable. And a nice warm smile wouldn’t go amiss either.
● You are respectful to all voters, even to those who have chosen another candidate.
Smile & Dial
Phone canvassing is another high priority activity for us. When we are not able to connect with voters at the door, we are often able to reach them by phone or leave a pre-recorded voicemail for them if they don’t answer at the time. Additionally, sometimes we need to call other volunteers regarding upcoming tasks or events.
This activity is a good fit for you if:
● You are comfortable talking to people on the phone.
● You have a warm, engaging voice.
● You are a good listener.
● You are respectful to all voters, even to those who have chosen another candidate.
Data Darlings
Entering the data that we obtain from foot and phone canvassers will give us a perspective on candidate strength and issues that are important to voters. Entering sign requests, donation pledges, and voters interested in a follow-up by the candidate are also data entered.
This activity is a good fit for you if:
● You are comfortable with computers.
● You type accurately.
Meet & Greet
When voters enter or telephone the campaign office, we need someone there to respond with a positive vibe. It may well be their first contact with us.
This is a good fit for you if:
● You have a nice smile and a warm, engaging voice.
● You are resourceful. Sometimes you will be able to refer voters to our website or offer them one of our informational brochures. Other times, you may need to engage another teammate in order to assist the voter.
● You are patient and caring.
● You write neatly and can accurately capture the voter’s issue/concern/question when taking messages.
● You are respectful to all voters, even to those who have chosen another candidate.
Sign, Sealed & Delivered
Having a plethora of our green candidate signs on lawns/highways is a great way to visually show green support. When you are part of the sign team, you are doing a very important part of the campaign.
This is a good fit for you if:
● You have a vehicle.
● You have the time to deliver signs in a timely manner throughout the campaign period.
Support Superstars
There are lots of tasks that need to be done during the campaign in order to support the canvassers, the sign team, and the candidate. These tasks might include things like photocopying, putting signs together, restocking canvass kits with pens and papers on clip boards, and making buttons.
This activity is a good fit for you if:
● You want to help but prefer not to canvass or you are not confident around computers.
● You don’t mind repetitive tasks.
● You can be flexible when priorities shift.
Feeding the hungry mob
The candidate, campaign manger, canvass captains and office staff are busy doing all manner of campaign activities and have little time to eat. Great campaigns have food ready for them at their office “home”. You can prepare food at home or can organize others to do so. Expenses are covered by the campaign.
This activity is a good fit for you if:
● You want to help but prefer not to canvass.
● You like preparing healthy and energy giving food and can work in less than ideal conditions.
Slack
The campaign uses the Slack messaging app in order to communicate with our volunteers. Someone will shortly email you an invitation to Slack. Once you reply, you will be invited to the Kitchener South Hespeler Green Party Workspace as well as any other team channels applicable to your volunteer mandate. If you ever need a hand navigating this new tool, fear not. A member of our Team will be happy to walk you through the basics. We’re committed to supporting you.
Ready to get started?
We just need you to complete our volunteer sign-up sheet and then you are ready to go! Thank you again for volunteering. Your help will make a difference and we truly appreciate it.
